Femtosecond measurement equipment: Loss measuring instrument for dispersive reflectance testing of optical devices
Loss measuring instrument for dispersive reflectance testing of optical devices
Ultrafast Innovations' GLACIER measuring instrument utilizes the extremely sensitive characteristics of optical cavity ring-down spectroscopy to quantify the loss caused by optical coatings to 5pp. The most typical application is to measure reflectivity up to 99.9995%, which is called a super-reflective mirror. This is impossible to achieve with traditional measurement methods, which can only measure reflectance in the >1000ppm range (<99.9%).

Optical cavity ring-down spectroscopy measures optical loss by measuring the decay of light energy in the cavity. This technology achieves unparalleled sensitivity because light experiences a loss every time it travels back and forth in the cavity. The lower the loss, the longer the light can stay in the cavity, thereby improving the measurement accuracy. The device features high-speed data acquisition, recording measurement data in seconds, and provides a computer and software for collecting and analyzing data in real time.

Working principle:

The principle of reflectivity/loss measurement using optical cavity ring-down spectroscopy is based on the fact that the loss is extremely low every time a light pulse is bounced by a mirror. When the pulse travels back and forth in the cavity, it will experience a light loss, and the light intensity will be reduced by a fixed ratio. Therefore, the intensity of the pulse in the cavity is determined as an exponential function that changes with time, thereby determining the reflectivity of the cavity mirror.

Typical case:

The picture below shows a typical case of GLACIER testing a 1030nm ultra-high reflection mirror. The loss of the test mirror is the result of subtracting the loss of a cavity, so what is obtained is the absolute loss of the test piece.
