Plano-convex lenses have one convex surface and one flat surface, and have a positive focal length. They are typically used in applications such as beam reduction, focal length reduction, or image magnification. To reduce spherical aberration, when a plano-convex lens is used to focus a collimated beam, the beam should be incident on the curved surface of the lens; when used to collimate a point light source, the beam should be incident on a flat surface. LBTEK uses CaF2 to manufacture a variety of lenses. CaF2 has high transmittance in the ultraviolet and infrared spectral ranges and an extremely high damage threshold, making it widely used in the excimer laser industry. CaF2 material has a low refractive index, ranging from 1.35 to 1.51 in the operating range of 180 nm-8.0 µm. CaF2 is also very chemically inert compared to similar materials such as barium fluoride and magnesium fluoride. It also has high hardness characteristics. It is an ideal choice for lenses used in the ultraviolet and infrared bands.
