PPLN (periodically poled lithium niobate) is a quasi-phase-matched nonlinear crystal transparent from 0.4 to 4.5 µm, covering the visible, near-IR and mid-IR. With an effective nonlinear coefficient of about 17.3 pm/V, it allows single-pass conversion efficiencies of up to 80% with pulsed lasers. MgO-doped PPLN (MgO:PPLN) has a much higher damage threshold and is the standard choice for high-power operation.
